Recent Arts (Tobias Freund & Valentina Berthelon)
Recent Arts is duo formed by Tobias Freund, known for his techno releases on Ostgut Ton, and Chilean visual artist Valentina Berthelon, together they bring together experimental electronic music and visual arts to create deep and unique experiences for the audience.
“Skin” is their new project, a collaboration with Argentinean singer Barbie Williams, dancers Xenia Wiest, Shiori Tada, Rob Fordeyn and performers Simona Marini and Desireh.
We live in an increasingly technological world characterised by a never ending desire of perfection, an era of smartphones and social media that constantly attempts to divide and disembody us. In this context, we see the need to present the “moving body itself” as communicative agent, using improvisatory actions as one of our main sources of inspiration and creation. The body and the skin will never be perfect nor allow perfection to be achieved. On the contrary, the skins manifest as an evolving map of the individual’s experience, which cannot be wiped clean, A constant process of decay and regeneration.
“Skin” Live A/V is composed by different audiovisual pieces. Most of them are made with the video register of session where performers embrace the body in the form of choreographed and improvised movements. Throughout the show the bodies tell stories and create tensions, inviting the audience to think about the limits and possibilities of their own bodies.
The concept of “Skin” is also developed in the stage design. Music and video will be played behind a translucent screen and it is through effects of lightning that Recent Arts will be seen by the audience. Everything in it, music, lights, video projections and the live singing will create a sense of union. “Skin” will be revealed in its dualistic complexity as something that covers and discloses, at once porous and opaque, mundane and yet mysterious, a fact and a symbol. We are able to aesthetically represent the visible and tangible surfaces of our bodies but, at bottom, we may forever remain unknown to ourselves. Skin reveals as much as it conceals. From improvised body movements to skin textures, the segments of this performance explore meanings of human emotion in tandem with haunting musical landscapes.
“Skin” is an audiovisual experience where experimental electronic music, video projections, lights and performative dance melt into a deep sequence of audio-visual narratives.
