Vanity Productions - 'Only the Grains of Love Remain’ LP
This latest work from Vanity Productions is a turbulence steadied to rest with care, and marks a critical high point in the project's evolution.
As the nom de plume of Posh Isolation's co-founder Christian Stadsgaard, there is a deeply private yet fiercely empathic quality to 'Only the Grains of Love Remain.' Pirouetting between his collaborative work with Loke Rahbek as Damien Dubrovnik, as well as The Empire Line with Varg and Iron Sight, to name just Stadsgaard's most recent activity, the inwardness reserved for Vanity Productions is perhaps a necessary step. That the emotive experimentation should generate such a touching soliloquy is an arresting watermark, presenting 'Only the Grains of Love Remain' as the most eloquent work of the project to date.
Following on from 'Mardini' last year, 'Only the Grains of Love Remain' takes a delicate and determined route through the terrain of Vanity Productions. Mapped with musique concrète's metrics, there is an uneasy sensation between guilty revulsion and cosmic longing captured in the moments of harmony. Dissolving these small bursts of clarity-through-agony is however not a matter of exploring intensity with volume, or other such devices and motifs. With an almost bitter precision, Stadsgaard continually spikes the grounding compositional elements with unnervingly distant patterns of crisp synthetic alloys. Where weighted, gothic passages are undone into peaceful plateaus, and there is a sense of coveted respite from the body's adrenal chemistry. Temporality is suspended, enough to solicit reflection.
As the work coasts the mesh of decision/indecision, witness/actor, falling/flying, however it strikes, one gets the sense that the after-image of noise being articulated is in the end giving way to a greater cathartic broadcast that 'Only the Grains of Love Remain' documents: life, love, and thought.

Phase Fatale creates techno from disparate subcultures of dead industrial with a post-punk spirit, bringing back an immediacy and aggressive energy sorely missing in the contemporary electronic landscape.
With “Redeemer,” the debut full length from Phase Fatale, conceived by DJ and producer Hayden Payne in New York by way of Berlin, deepens his exploration of the tension—both sonic and conceptual—begun on his EPs released over the last three years on the Jealous God and Unterton labels. In intent and impact, Phase Fatale bears allegiance to the surreal influence of Juan Mendez aka Silent Servant, with whom Payne has worked closely in collaboration. It is therefore appropriate that the 12” EP featuring three extended mixes created together with Silent Servant from “Redeemer” (“Order of Severity,” “Operate Within,” and “Spoken Ashes,”) will be released in tandem.
A defining trait of Payne’s music is his ability to reconcile and integrate the underground character of his past into a precise story on the dancefloor. His subtle incorporation of guitars and vocals never make way for disclaimers or apology. They puncture the face of the mix or recede into the latticework of the sequence, always stalking the perimeter. While maintaining a cold energy that isn’t begot with nostalgia, he edits and extracts the essence of his influences into a unapologetic future. His malaise is repurposed for the degenerated present—in his atmospheric universe of minimalist/maximal percussion.
Beginning with the opening track, “Spoken Ashes,” Phase Fatale demonstrates his unique ability to build tension, cultivating a sound that vacillates, at times imperceptibly, between fragile tranquility and unsettling claustrophobia. He maintains this tense equipoise throughout the album, frequently counterbalancing the vigor of the drums with layers of lost melodies that hang just above the frenetic rhythm and grainy pulse of electronics. The tracks here are controlled and succinct, tightly wound and relentlessly kinetic. Rarely extending beyond the five-minute mark, the songs are compositionally sculpted simultaneously for physical impact and functional decay.
Payne describes “Redeemer” as a deeply “personal piece,” a characterization that is clear upon listening, but doesn’t offer any simple answers. On “Redeemer,” Payne raises a palpable question tracing the circumference somewhere between the despair and liberation one feels standing at the precipice of cynical ecstasy. This is a techno album, but one that is refreshingly punk.
It's a great honour and pleasure to announce that Potnia Theron now represents Drew McDowall, a former member of Coil and Psychic TV, a music veteran who has released two solo full length albums on Dais Records; a solo debut album Collapse in 2015 and Unnatural Channel in May 2017. Drew presented "Unnatural Channel" Live A/V as world-premiere at last year's Berlin Atonal Kraftwerk main stage with Florence To, exploring darkly subterranean themes and the new world that emerges from the disintegration of mental, physical, and emotional unities.
In addition to his numerous collaborative duties with artists from Tres Warren (Psychic Ills) and Nicky Mao (Hiro Kone/ Effi Briest) to Croatian Amor and Puce Mary, Drew formed an audience as a solo artist, playing countless performances and showcases around New York’s electronic music scene. Drew has solidified his standing as a leading electronic musician with the recording of new material for his debut album entitled Collapse and follow-up Unnatural Channel on Dais. While Collapse is filled with modular synthesizer compositions augmented by obtuse sampling cut-ups, his second full length endeavor Unnatural Channel allows Drew to allocate offerings to the ghosts of his past using methods not fully understood. Moving forward from the impact left with his first album, Unnatural Channel moves into more uncharted territory.

"SHXCXCHCXSH are undoubtable masters of vivid techno constructions, which are as heavy as they are refined. No wonder that such sound needs its own platform to be showcased and elaborated upon. That is why Rösten is now born, a newly founded label established by the duo to realize their ever-evolving creative visions.
Rösten will be inaugurated by the first EP from SHXCXCHCXSH themselves. Diverting from the slow-paced and oneiric sound of their last album into an uncompromising monolithic techno stream, they showcase their capability of unifying functional dancefloor energy with grainy lo-fi sensibilities. The intoxicated pulsations end up being wrapped in steel-wool crackle and the result sounds like techno channeled through some alien radio transmitters, yet at the same time retaining its piercing, dynamic energy. In terms of flow and organic feel, these four tracks might also invoke in the listener visions of some tribal jam session taking place in the distant future. Without relying too much on external references SHXCXCHCXSH sculpt a small self-sufficient world with dystopian and cinematic flow, which acts as a de-personalised journey across some unfamiliar, mysterious, yet inviting landscapes with dusty clouds settling upon the nocturnal terrains."

We are thrilled to announce that 2 amazing Athens-based artists - ANFS & Sawf - are now part of Potnia Theron.
ANFS is an electronic music producer and DJ based in Athens. Involved in various projects since an early age, he discovered an interest in electronic music, weird electronics and obscure sounds while studying sound design. In 2012, alongside fellow friends Kondaktor and 3.14, he co-founded the record label “Modal Analysis”, and later on 2015 he launched his own personal imprint, “Vanila”. Both platforms work as a self-referential point as well as an archive that documents the current electronic scene of Greece.
Sawf started experimenting with electronic music production and digital mixing in early 2000 before he released his first album on Perc Trax in 2011. His sound has been a defining and integral part of the thriving electronic scene in Athens, releasing on Athens-based labels such as Modal Analysis, Vanila, Pi Electronics, Phormix, and his own imprint Kafta.
ANFS & Sawf are the strong driving force of Athens' current electronic music scene and their unique sounds have been penetrating the global music sphere well-beyond their base of Greece with the releases on the labels like Modal Analysis, Vanila, Pi Electronics, Phormix & Kafta.
Unterton introduces an artist who’s already renowned for his work within informed circles but yet to be discovered by most: Berlin-based New Yorker Phase Fatale debuts on Unterton after strong releases with respected labels Jealous God and [aufnahme + wiedergabe] and six well-received club appearances at Berghain.
Originally coming from a Post Punk / Cold Wave band background Hayden Payne stated in a recent Berghain club flyer interview: “Techno [...] resulted from a development of [Wave and EBM] genres and its movements. Punk and Techno share the same mindset, this connection has always been there for me.” Thus it was no surprise that his Anubis12“ for Unterton combines said spirit with four club-ready tracks, placed firmly left of the center.

"...a suspenseful performance, poetic and fragile at times and dare I say dark. The black and white visuals flickering on the big screen contrasted interestingly with the Swedes’ shadows which almost felt part of the visual frame."

First show since their world-premiere A/V Live @Berlin Atonal 2016, Recent Arts (Tobias./Tobias Freund & Valentina Berthelon) is performing at Non Standard is the Standard – 10 Years Non Standard Productions, a night for celebrating the 10th Anniversary of Non Standard Productions with an amazing lineup of:
Live: Atom TM / Max Loderbauer / Recent Arts / Javiera Gonzalez at HAU1 / Afterwards: Party with DJ-Set by Aerea Negrot at WAU
Now celebrating its 10th anniversary and looking back over 35 years of Tobias Freund’s career in experimental electronics, Non Standard Productions has been instrumental in raising the work of its creator and his collaborators to the forefront of contemporary electronic music. The releases are collaborations between Tobias and colleges. As the name itself suggests the idea of the label is to be a platform in witch anything non standard can be released.
The label is orientated to eclectic experimentations, going from the frequency interpretations of MFP to the beat studies of NSI, passing through the freeform rhythms of Margaret Dygas, the uneven scales of Odd Machine, the haunting vocals of Javiera Gonzalez to the live audiovisual performance of Recent Arts. This duo formed by Tobias Freund and Valentina Berthelon has become a primary focus for NSP, is also amongst the label’s most personal statements and a fitting summation to a decade spent keeping nonconformism central to the label while retaining the humanity much contemporary electronic music often lacks.
Non Standard Productions remains true to the mission stated in its name 10 years onwards, illuminating new and unconventional pathways in electronic music to point the way forwards.
